My Kentucky Derby hats make "GREAT" Wedding Hats!

www.eastangelharbor.com

When you purchase a wide brimmed Kentucky Derby hat from my shop East Angel Harbor Hats:  you'll also have a lovely hat to wear to your next wedding or any occasion where you'd like to wear an elegant hat!
The history of weddings celebrated during the month of June goes all the way back to early Roman times, well over two thousand years ago! The Romans celebrated a festival in honor of the deity Juno, wife of Jupiter and goddess of marriage and childbirth, on June first.

Uncle Jim's Wedding
During the 1400 and 1500, June was considered the time when people came outdoors after a long winter and bathed communally. I guess to marry when one is clean seemed to them to be a good beginning… It is quite possible that the use of flowers at weddings was also, initially, a way of masking body odor… June weddings also come from the Celtic calendar. Even the term “honeymoon” has a historical origin, referring to the first moon after the summer solstice – June 21 – which was called the “honey moon.”

Time for your Pink Hat for the Kentucky Oaks!

I can't believe it's that time of year again!  Only a few weeks left before the Kentucky Derby!
 www.eastangelharbor.com
It's still not too late to order your hat and receive it with a little time to spare.
May 1-2, 2015 is Derby Weekend.
The Derby weekend actually begins with the Oaks on Friday and the Derby on Saturday.
It's common place for the guests to enjoy both days.
The Oaks is dedicated to breast cancer survivors, so the color of choice for your hat, should be pink.

Think Kentucky Derby! Spring is Such a “GLORIOUS” Time of the Year!

My Downton Abbey hats are perfect for the Kentucky Derby or Ascot hats!

After a long winter, the vestiges of spring are welcome sights.  Even the tiny touch of green as the leaves begin to bud bring a sense of relief combined with delight that winter is finally departed.  The daffodils… as they peek through the ground lighten your heart with gladness as you anticipate the glorious blooms that will soon explode in all their beauty.  Making plans to enjoy warmer and kinder days as the snow melts away and we can even look forward to mowing the grass.

It’s also the time of year when we celebrate Easter, Mother’s Day and graduations; all are occasions to wear a hat.  Also we make plans for Kentucky Derby, races and tea parties!
Therefore spring can be celebrated with the daintiest of hats as well as the most extravagant of hats. This smaller brim hat that I’m showcasing in this blog is perfect for any occasion.
The hats pictured are some of my more dainty creations!
All of my hats are either very limited editions or One of a Kind!

The Kentucky Derby & Red Roses

Each year, a garland of more than 400 red roses is sewn into a green satin backing with the seal of the Commonwealth on one end and the Twin Spires and number of the race’s current renewal on the other. Each garland is also adorned with a “crown” of roses, green fern and ribbon. The “crown,” a single rose pointing upward in the center of the garland, symbolizes the struggle and heart necessary to reach the Derby Winner’s Circle.

Red roses are used to say “I love you,” and are symbolic of unconditional love.
They also stands for courage and respect.
Red roses express deep feelings of love to a very special person and should therefore never be offered on a first date or to a person with whom one is not intimate.

Kentucky Derby Hat ~ Run for the Roses ~ Red Roses

However, since the garland of roses that drapes beautifully across the winning horse at the Kentucky Derby is Red  I’m going to talk about my hats and red roses.

In 1904 the red rose became the official flower of the Kentucky Derby
The tradition was strengthened when, in 1925, New York sports columnist Bill Corum, later the president of Churchill Downs, dubbed the Kentucky Derby the “Run for the Roses.”
The garland as it exists today was first introduced in 1932 for the 58th running won by Burgoo King.

East Angel Harbor Hat featured in Tea Time Magazine ~ Kentucky Derby ~ May 2014 ~ Pt. 1

I was contacted by Tea Time magazine early spring of 2014.
 www.eastangelharbor.com
They needed hats to compliment an article they were writing for the May issue.  The article was to focus on a Kentucky Derby tea party.  I sent them six hats and they chose 3 for their article.  One of the hats was worn by Lorna Reeves, editor.
The hats were designed to compliment the tea service used in the article.  The colors are light and dark blue, silver, gray and white.  The tea set also incorporated peacock feathers in the design so a couple of my hats also incorporated actual peacock feathers and delicate peacock brooches.
These “One of a Kind” had designs are now available on my website www.eastangelharbor.com
