I’ve always chosen the more traditional Edwardian hat designs. It’s not that I’m playing it safe, I just love the look and feel of wool, sinamay and feathers!  I also love traditional designs of the Edwardian Era.  I’ve studied many catalogs, as well as millinery publications and quite honestly, I haven’t found a lot in the glitzy colors of gold or silver.  However, this spring, I’m breaking with tradition and plan on offering several “One of a Kind” gold and silver Edwardian style designs that will be beautiful for Downton Abbey events as well as glamorous for your Kentucky Derby hat.

The history of weddings celebrated during the month of June goes all the way back to early Roman times, well over two thousand years ago! The Romans celebrated a festival in honor of the deity Juno, wife of Jupiter and goddess of marriage and childbirth, on June first.

During the 1400 and 1500, June was considered the time when people came outdoors after a long winter and bathed communally. I guess to marry when one is clean seemed to them to be a good beginning… It is quite possible that the use of flowers at weddings was also, initially, a way of masking body odor… June weddings also come from the Celtic calendar. Even the term “honeymoon” has a historical origin, referring to the first moon after the summer solstice – June 21 – which was called the “honey moon.”

The Derby weekend actually begins with the Oaks on Friday and the Derby on Saturday.

It's common place for the guests to enjoy both days.

The Oaks is dedicated to breast cancer survivors, so the color of choice for your hat, should be pink.

After a long winter, the vestiges of spring are welcome sights.  Even the tiny touch of green as the leaves begin to bud bring a sense of relief combined with delight that winter is finally departed.  The daffodils… as they peek through the ground lighten your heart with gladness as you anticipate the glorious blooms that will soon explode in all their beauty.  Making plans to enjoy warmer and kinder days as the snow melts away and we can even look forward to mowing the grass.

It’s also the time of year when we celebrate Easter, Mother’s Day and graduations; all are occasions to wear a hat.  Also we make plans for Kentucky Derby, races and tea parties!

Therefore spring can be celebrated with the daintiest of hats as well as the most extravagant of hats. This smaller brim hat that I’m showcasing in this blog is perfect for any occasion.

The Kentucky Derby & Red Roses

Each year, a garland of more than 400 red roses is sewn into a green satin backing with the seal of the Commonwealth on one end and the Twin Spires and number of the race’s current renewal on the other. Each garland is also adorned with a “crown” of roses, green fern and ribbon. The “crown,” a single rose pointing upward in the center of the garland, symbolizes the struggle and heart necessary to reach the Derby Winner’s Circle. 

Red roses:

Red roses are used to say “I love you,” and are symbolic of unconditional love.

They also stands for courage and respect.

Red roses express deep feelings of love to a very special person and should therefore never be offered on a first date or to a person with whom one is not intimate.

It’s a red hat with red roses and red lace.
